Art workshops poster

Have you seen it? A poster at the entrance of Daily Bread was explaining the story behind the new steel sculptures on our Growing Space. If you missed it, you can fin it here!

And why not also playing at matching the children’s drawing and the sculptures 🙂

Meeting Minutes

Growing Spaces Meeting Agenda Minutes

(22/03/2017)

We had a nice (and quite short) meeting this month to discuss about on-going and future project in Growing Spaces.

– We are organising a tour of the spaces at the north of Cambridge (north of the river). The idea is to see our growing spaces together and decide what we can do for them this year (add signs, contact neighbors, plant more things…). We will start with a visit of the north spaces on the weekends of the 6th or 13th May. Please, could you fill in this doodle to let us know what dates are best for you? https://beta.doodle.com/poll/fs85tdsidic58p7h#table

Following the journey bellow we will see these growing spaces (in order):

1- The hidden castle garden

2- Castle Raised beds (potential futur space)

3- Victoria Road throughway (potential futur space

4- Harris Road Raised Beds (potential futur space)

5- The Edible Roundabout

6- 37 Lawrence Way Raised beds

7- Armitage Way Raised beds

8- Daily Bread Raised beds

North_spaces_route

– We will organise a schedule of the gardening events happening this season to see all spaces this year (one space every 2 weeks). More to come soon!

– News on the Art project at our Daily Bread Space: The art project is close to the end! You can find the story of this wonderful project here!

– Rosie applied on behalf of growing spaces to an offer of a Grow Wild kit for community groups and it just came through!  The kit consists of an oyster mushroom growing kit and two boxes of various kinds of wild flower seeds.  There is a poster in each box with lots of colorful info and stickers.  It seems like a wonderful package, which would be great to use with a bunch of kids.  If you know any school or community group with kids that would do many great things with this, please let us know!

– From the Transition Cambridge hub meeting:

Earth Optimism day in Cambridge is happening on 22nd April. TC will have a stall. You can find more information about this event here.

Art workshops – decorating the raised beds

As you may have seen from our previous blog notes (here, here and here) we are running an art project with the Groove School, Hilary (art facilitator) and Jayne (artist).

Inspired by the children’s drawings, Jayne designed amazing steel-welded sculptures and we then attached them onto the raised beds. We had to empty the raided beds to do so! It was a hard work but as you can see from the photos, it was worth it 🙂

There will be soon a poster at Daily Bread explaining the story of this project.

Meeting minutes

We had a really nice Growing Spaces meeting on Tuesday 17th January at Anglia Ruskin University with a few new faces 🙂

We first introduced each other and had a very interesting discussion about what is Growing Spaces and how to develop new spaces and make the existing ones flourish.

Here are the main points we discussed:

  • Growing Spaces will have a stall at Trumpington Seedy Sunday on 5th February (13h30 – 16h). You can get more information about Seedy Sunday here. If you have time, please come help out for half an hour! It’s very low key: Study our map, learn and have discussions on what Growing Spaces is all about, meet and great and be a part! Here’s a doodle poll: http://doodle.com/poll/we5q8ahy9ury2wp4
  • We will organise tours of our existing and potential spaces for you to discover them (if you don’t know them), but also to discuss what we can do for each space this year and to add signs. It will probably be one tour for the north of the city and another one for the south (in February or March). If you are interested in helping organising, please contact us. More information to come soon!
  • We need carers and gardeners to adopt some of our spaces as some of us left Cambridge! If you think you will have time to adopt a growing space this year, please have a look at our map. Perhaps there is one close to you, just waiting for you! We will give more specific information about the needs of each growing space in the future.

Hoping to see many growing spaces project coming true this year!

Art Workshops – Week 3

Third and last week of the art workshops! The kids made and painted giant leaves. I am wondering which plants of our growing space inspired them for this great work 🙂

Thanks so much to Hilary for doing these workshops at the Grove school and to the Cambridge City Council for giving us a grant for this project!

Art Workshops – Week 2

Hilary went back to the school and with the kids created a very impressive map of their journey from the Grove School to our Growing Space at Daily Bread. It is wonderful to see so many creative hands at work 🙂

Art Workshops

We are running art workshops at the Grove primary school with Hilary Cox and Jayne Ruffell Ward to create art works for the raised beds at our Daily Bread Space.

As you can see from the photos below, the kids are enjoying themselves and producing so wonderful artworks! They even went to visit the space and had the chance to smell sage, rosemary or scented geranium 🙂

These inspiring art workshops and artworks would not be possible without the grant we got from the Cambridge City Council. Thanks a lot!

Tomato harvest at Daily Bread space

Now that cold nights are back, we harvested the last green cherry tomatoes to make some jam.

It was great to see the space is still looking really good! If you pass by, please help yourself with herbs and try the lemon scented geranium, it is just wonderful 🙂

Gardening Workshop at Daily Bread Space

We had a great time for our gardening workshop on Friday at our Daily Bread Space, harvesting the wheat, adding canes to support the plants and planting broccolis and chard for this winter.
